The Student Campaign for Suicide Prevention (SCSP) is a formation of students in the Stokes County School System, where the goal is to distribute resources to the student body and the community in attempt to lower the suicide rate in Stokes County and eliminate the stigma around suicide all together.

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. Donating to our cause helps suicidologists, clinical psychologists and psychiatrists create and maintain studies for a "cure to suicide".

The man above is Dr. Richard McKeon PhD, MPH. He is considered to be one of the largest and most successful suicidologists in the United States. He has many studies and has developed many protocols and tactics for suicide prevention. From him, the SCSP takes great honor in believing in his concept of "Zero Suicide", a world where suicide is non-existent. And with great effort and time, we find that Zero Suicide is more than possible.

You may say that Suicide is not your battle, but it has been found that there are cases of suicide in adults as old as 80 and children younger than the age of 8 according to the AFSP. It is very unfortunate that people at such a young age are susceptible to this end, and most parents and non-parents don't know the warning signs of an individual considering suicide. Please, educate yourself on the warning signs and donate to the cause so that researches can continue to find ways to identify people at risk.

Part of our battle is to eliminate the stigmas in our society. To help us, try using terms such as "an individual who may be contemplating suicide" or "a person with schizophrenia" instead of terms like "a suicidal" or "a schizophrenic", as these are labels that imply that the person is their disorder. It is critical to understand that a disorder is only an unfortunate condition that is associated with the person, but is not part of the person him/ herself. It's also important to consider that a person contemplating suicide is feeling hopeless and has no other choice, not because they are "psycho", "dramatic" or "crazy". Instead of out-casting individuals with these thoughts, offer your unconditional support and if you can't help that person, refer them to someone who can help them, such as a mental health professional or counselor.

Never hesitate to ask if you feel that someone may be contemplating suicide. When it comes to this matter, timing is everything, and individuals with these thoughts need your help. Be a hero and save lives by contributing to our cause, and together, we can prevent suicide!
